Biography Born in Stockton (Calif.) on September 6, 1894, Howard Pease began his writing career with a story written in 1907 while he was in the sixth grade. After graduating from Stanford University and working for a time as a merchant seaman, Pease published his first story in the June 1921 issue of "American Boy."
